Monthly Tropical Weather Summary
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL
800 AM PDT Sun Oct 1 2023
For the eastern North Pacific, east of 140 degrees west longitude:
September was generally below average in the eastern Pacific basin.
While four tropical cyclones formed during the month of September,
only two of those went on to become named storms. Jova became a
category 5 hurricane over the open waters of the eastern Pacific
during the early portion of the month, and Tropical Storm Kenneth
formed just past the middle of the month. Tropical Depressions
Twelve-E and Fourteen-E were short-lived tropical cyclones over the
western and central portions of the basin, respectively. None of
these tropical cyclones directly affected land.
The formation of two named storms is below the long-term
(1991-2020) September average of three named storms. The formation
of one hurricane is below the long-term average of two, but with
Jova becoming a major hurricane that places it at the long-term
September average of one major hurricane.
The number of named storms that have formed in the basin so far in
2023 (12) is close to the long-term (1991-2020) average of 13
through September. The number of hurricanes (7) is at the average
long-term pace (7) through September. In terms of Accumulated
Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the combined strength and
duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, 2023 is near the
long-term (1991-2020) average.
