000 ABPZ30 KNHC 011441 TWSEP Monthly Tropical Weather Summary NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 800 AM PDT Fri Sep 1 2023 For the eastern North Pacific, east of 140 degrees west longitude: Five named storms formed in the eastern Pacific basin in the month of August, three of those being tropical storms, and two major hurricanes. Dora, which formed in July, became a major hurricane in August before crossing into both the Central and Western Pacific basins. Hilary made landfall as a tropical storm over the northern Baja California Peninsula and then moved northward, bringing tropical storm impacts into the southwestern United States. The formation of five tropical cyclones is above the long-term (1991-2020) August average of 3 or 4 named storms forming in the month, with 2 becoming hurricanes, and one becoming a major hurricane. In terms of Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the combined strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, 2023 is about 15 percent above the long-term (1991-2020) average.
