Monthly Tropical Weather Summary
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL
800 AM PDT Fri Sep 1 2023
For the eastern North Pacific, east of 140 degrees west longitude:
Five named storms formed in the eastern Pacific basin in the month
of August, three of those being tropical storms, and two major
hurricanes. Dora, which formed in July, became a major hurricane in
August before crossing into both the Central and Western Pacific
basins. Hilary made landfall as a tropical storm over the northern
Baja California Peninsula and then moved northward, bringing
tropical storm impacts into the southwestern United States.
The formation of five tropical cyclones is above the long-term
(1991-2020) August average of 3 or 4 named storms forming in the
month, with 2 becoming hurricanes, and one becoming a major
hurricane. In terms of Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which
measures the combined strength and duration of tropical storms and
hurricanes, 2023 is about 15 percent above the long-term
(1991-2020) average.
Reports on individual cyclones, when completed, are available at
