000 ABPZ30 KNHC 011456 TWSEP Monthly Tropical Weather Summary NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 800 AM PDT Sat Oct 1 2022 For the eastern North Pacific, east of 140 degrees west longitude: Five named storms formed in the eastern Pacific basin in the month of September, which is above the long-term (1991-2020) average of three named storms forming in the month. Only one of those storms became a hurricane (Kay), which is below the long-term average of two hurricanes and one major hurricane in the month of September. Kay made landfall as a hurricane along the west coast of the central Baja California peninsula, and Lester affected portions of the southern coast of Mexico as a tropical storm. The number of named storms that have formed in the basin so far in 2022 (14) is slightly above the long-term (1991-2020) average of 13 through September (Bonnie is not included since it formed in the Atlantic basin). The number of hurricanes (8) is slightly ahead of average (7) through the end of September. In terms of Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the combined strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, 2022 is running 10 to 15 percent above the long-term (1991-2020) median to date.
