Monthly Tropical Weather Summary
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL
800 AM PDT Tue Aug 1 2023
For the eastern North Pacific, east of 140 degrees west longitude:
Three tropical cyclones, Hurricane Calvin, Tropical Storm Dora, and
Tropical Depression Four-E, formed in the basin for the month of
July. Shortly after passing southwestern Mexico, Beatriz dissipated
on 1 July, while Adrian became a post-tropical remnant low well to
the southwest of the Baja California Peninsula on 2 July. Dora
formed on the last day of the month, and was still a tropical
depression at the end of the month.
The formation of three tropical cyclones is below the long-term
average for July. The number of named storms in the basin so far in
2023 (4) is below the long-term average of 5 or 6 through July.
However, the season had a late start, with Adrian marking the
second-latest formation of the first named storm of the season
during the reliable period of records (1971-2023).
In terms of Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the
combined strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes,
2023 is well below the long-term (1991-2020) average.
Reports on individual cyclones, when completed, are available at
the National Hurricane Center website at:
