000 ABPZ30 KNHC 011444 TWSEP Monthly Tropical Weather Summary NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 800 AM PDT Wed Nov 1 2023 For the eastern North Pacific, east of 140 degrees west longitude: October activity was well above normal in the eastern Pacific basin. Five named storms formed in October, with three of these becoming major hurricanes. This activity exceeded the 30-year climatology (1991-2020) of two named storms, one of them becoming a hurricane, with a major hurricane forming one out of every two Octobers. Four of the five tropical cyclones that formed in October made landfall in Mexico, with both Lidia and Otis making landfall as major hurricanes in the Mexican states of Jalisco and Guerrero, respectively. In particular, Otis directly and severely impacted the city of Acapulco, Mexico, as a Category 5 hurricane. Norma made landfall as a hurricane just west-northwest of Cabo San Lucas in the state of Baja California Sur, and Max made landfall as a tropical storm in the state of Guerrero. The number of named storms that have formed in the basin so far in 2023 (17) is above the long-term (1991-2020) average of 14 through October. The number of hurricanes (10) is also above the long-term average of 8 through October. In terms of Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the combined strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, 2023 is about 20 percent above the long-term (1991-2020) average.
