Monthly Tropical Weather Summary
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL
800 AM EDT Thu Aug 1 2024
For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:
July began busy across the Atlantic basin with Major Hurricane
Beryl and Tropical Storm Chris occurring during the first part
of the month. Beryl became the earliest category 5 hurricane on
record in the basin, and it made three landfalls--first on
Carriacou Island in Grenada (Category 4), second on the Yucatan
Peninsula of Mexico (Category 2), and third on the middle Texas
coastline (Category 1). Tropical Storm Chris also made landfall
along the Gulf coast of mainland Mexico. Despite the early-month
activity, there were no new named storms that formed over the basin
during the remainder of July.
For the season to date, the number of named storms (3) is near
average, although it is not common to have had a major hurricane
at this point in the season. Based on a 30-year (1991-2020)
climatology, 2 or 3 named storms form by the end of July, with a
hurricane occuring every 1 to 2 years, and a major hurricane
occurring every 7 years. In terms of Accumulated Cyclone Energy
(ACE), which measures the strength and duration of tropical storms
and hurricanes, activity in the basin so far in 2024 is nearly 4
times higher than the long-term (1991-2020) mean, mainly due to the
contribution from Major Hurricane Beryl.
Reports on individual cyclones, when completed, are available at the
National Hurricane Center website at
