Atlantic Summary for August 2024
Monthly Summary

000 ABNT30 KNHC 011154 TWSAT Monthly Tropical Weather Summary NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 800 AM EDT Thu Aug 1 2024 For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico: July began busy across the Atlantic basin with Major Hurricane Beryl and Tropical Storm Chris occurring during the first part of the month. Beryl became the earliest category 5 hurricane on record in the basin, and it made three landfalls--first on Carriacou Island in Grenada (Category 4), second on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico (Category 2), and third on the middle Texas coastline (Category 1). Tropical Storm Chris also made landfall along the Gulf coast of mainland Mexico. Despite the early-month activity, there were no new named storms that formed over the basin during the remainder of July. For the season to date, the number of named storms (3) is near average, although it is not common to have had a major hurricane at this point in the season. Based on a 30-year (1991-2020) climatology, 2 or 3 named storms form by the end of July, with a hurricane occuring every 1 to 2 years, and a major hurricane occurring every 7 years. In terms of Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, activity in the basin so far in 2024 is nearly 4 times higher than the long-term (1991-2020) mean, mainly due to the contribution from Major Hurricane Beryl. Reports on individual cyclones, when completed, are available at the National Hurricane Center website at www.hurricanes.gov/data/tcr/index.php?season=2024&basin=atl Summary Table Name Dates Max Wind (mph) ------------------------------------------------------------------ TS Alberto 17-20 Jun 50 MH Beryl 28 Jun-9 Jul 165 TS Chris 30 Jun-1 Jul 40 ------------------------------------------------------------------ * Denotes a storm for which the post-storm analysis is complete. $$ Hurricane Specialist Unit
