Monthly Tropical Weather Summary
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL
800 AM EDT Sun Aug 1 2021
For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:
One hurricane (Elsa) formed in the Atlantic basin in July. The
tropical cyclone struck portions of the Windward Islands as a
hurricane, then passed near Haiti and Jamaica before making landfall
in Cuba as a tropical storm. Elsa briefly regained hurricane status
over the Gulf of Mexico before making another landfall as a topical
storm in the eastern Florida Panhandle. The storm then crossed the
Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states before become extratropical
over southern New England. The five named storms through the end of
July is well ahead of the pace of the recently updated 30-year
climatology (1991-2020).
In terms of Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the
strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, activity in
the basin so far in 2021 is well above average at more than twice
the climatological value.
Reports on individual cyclones, when completed, are available at
the National Hurricane Center website at
